I find it very lame if you cannot cook certain basic things at the age of 26. Don't matter if you are a boy or a girl: You have failed in my book. And I appreciate your sandwiches, your terrible scrambled egg, and that one incredibly hard dish that for some reason you decided to learn, but if making pasta is still a mystery, so we have a lot to learn!
Instead of giving you recipes, I want to give you tips, that someone between the ages of 25-30 should know like the back of their hands. Most importantly I want to make sure that you are no longer scared to go into the kitchen and take care of yourself! And the more tricks you learn, the easier it is gonna be to shop for yourself and healthier you are gonna get. So here we go!
The best thing for breakfast is eggs. Sunny side-up, scrambled, poached, omelettes... I am getting hungry just thinking about it. A lot of people do not like warm meals for breakfast and that is OK, you know, if you like a slice of bread, you do you. The reason, however, why you should befriend eggs is because it will give you the basics you need to be able to cook, well, almost any meal (of course, not the ones that need baking, for now let's stick to the top of the stove)! I feel like I am also adding eggs to meals that would otherwise become boring. Leftover pasta that is just not enough for a meal? Crack two eggs and add some bacon to it. Still hungry after a salad? If you add a sunny side-up, it will be a warm meal and your stomach will feel more filled than with just vegetables. Boring sandwiches? Slice up cooked eggs. Finally, a nice fried egg is possibly the best addition to hamburgers. You will get creative the more ways you know how to make eggs and as a topping it is one of the yummiest ingredients!
My favorite time of the day is brunch time, and I am lucky enough to have friends that I can cook for and make them care for my obsession for breakfast food. I love a burrito with scrambled eggs, I love burger with a fried egg, and of course pancakes. You cannot make pancakes without cracking a few eggs!
Let us now look at how easy it is:
Other breakfasts include toast and fresh fruits and oatmeal, granola, and so on. You do not have to eat eggs; a dietitian friend of mine told me that it might be the most important meal of the day, but you should not force it, if you like just two biscuits with your coffee, do not stray away from that. I just want you to see that the basics for cooking start at the beginning of the day. I am not a master-chef here, I do not possess all the knowledge, but I also know that I am no longer scared of recipes. I know what ratio of spices are to my liking and what is good fried, or baked, or steamed. There is a reason why breakfast cafes are so beloved and are always full of people. Yes, it is great when someone puts a plate in front of you, but overall, I think it is so much better if you cook for yourself and your beloved.
Finally, a good tip: frozen vegetables and fruits are your friend. You just take out a cups worth at night and move it to the fridge, in the morning it will be ready to be used. Vegetables are perfect for a salad or for toppings, while the fresh fruits are perfect for a smoothie, with yoghurt and granola (or for the pancakes!). I love a simple pancake recipe, 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk, 1 egg and a little bit of salt, mix, and you can make about 12 tiny pancakes. It is perfect for salty and sweet pancakes as well. I do like a pancake tower and if I build it up when it is nice, warm and fresh, the added cheese will melt and it's just... I hope you are hungry, I am definitely having pancakes for brunch today. It is also a great substitute for bread: I have a lot of friends who do not really care for bread, and gluten-free pancakes are incredibly easy to make. If you in the mood for a nice bacon and eggs, pancake is a great addition. Many times we only think of it as a sweet meal, but please, widen your expectation.
Now, get cooking! The challenge is going to be about eight entries over the month of April and I am going to give you as many tips as I can. Please, if you try out anything new just add it in the comments and let me know how it went! The quarantine is a perfect time for you to discover if you can or cannot cook. I do believe that everyone can learn how to cook, and if you have bought up all of those kilos of flour, you might as well learn what to do with them!
